“The soldiers out there suffer just as their children or orphaned children do here, likewise with the Horde, likewise with the Forsaken who actually remember a damn, and likewise like me. Don’t tell me we’re the only ones suffering in your delusional world of peace!” – Cham
Full name Chamaerus (Cha-may-rus) Baergs, Cham was born in a middle-class family with a father who worked as an engineer and a mother who worked as a nurse in the Stockades. At the age of 18 his parents were killed in separate incidents which left him broken and in despair. In due time however he was able to recover and climb back on his feet and find a job as a carrier. He grew to love the job and opened up his own delivery business, first starting in Stormwind and then blossoming into the organization it is today, the Freelance Carriers Union.
It wasn’t easy growing up for Cham as his mind was split on the matters that happened during the time. While he inherited all of his parents’ money and estate he had a difficult time managing it all. Luckily his godfather, Witzer Rigsborne caught word of his parents’ tragedy and helped him get his bearings on business, even willing to become his engineering teacher. After several months Cham was able to keep his investments and possessions organized and also become an astute engineer.
The two sparked off a successful delivery business and kept it floating, slowly recruiting as the months ran by. One fateful day Cham literally bumped into the love of his life – Reichel Lovegrove, who was a human druid orphaned from her real parents and raised by two Night Elves from Teldrassil. Love at first sight quickly turned to marriage and the duo became a trio.
After a year the business settled in well. Everything was fine until Cham found an old book lying in the attic of his home. The book was magically enchanted to never run out of pages so Cham decided to use it as a ledger – a choice which would ultimately drive the trio into a road they never thought possible to them. As Cham stayed near the book his mind slowly began to warp and sleep became a thing of the past as he began wandering around Azeroth, for the voices told him so.
After days of wandering Cham found himself within the Eastern Plaguelands, just outside of Corrin’s Crossing. It turns out the voices were warnings that he couldn’t discern due to some sinister meddling, and ultimately the book’s magical seal was destroyed to unveil a large demon which wanted Cham’s body as a host. Realizing the little choices he had Cham decided to fight the demon and was able to kill it but also at the cost of his own life. The magical energies the demon unleashed also sparked a Scourge patrol to scout the area and find Cham’s corpse, thus dragging him away to drive his fate to an even darker path.
Reichel and Witzer were shocked to find Cham under the Lich King’s grasp. Not wanting to leave him to his fate, Reichel crossed a very dangerous line to try and free him without killing him: Imbue her spirit into a weapon and try to snap Cham out. It was successful to say the least, but Reichel could only keep him under control for so long until she gave out, and Cham ended up returning to serve the Lich King once more… that is, until the battle at Light’s Hope occurred.
His spirit was freed and he was given control of his body once more only to regret the actions he witnessed under the command of the Lich King. Not only that, the love of his life had sacrificed her physical form to try and keep his body from doing anymore atrocious things but that did not last long. For this man it is a miracle he is still able to smile after all that’s happened to him.
Personality and Traits
Despite being dead Cham has a rather optimistic and energetic attitude set on him, always thinking on the bright side and smiling when the odds are set against him. Supposedly he believes that, while he committed many atrocious acts he has an eternity to redeem for them since there is no end to the new life that was brought onto him. Even though Reichel sacrificed herself to give him a short moment of respite the two are still together and sentient, and Cham is extremely grateful for such an outcome.
However, it’s not as if he learned nothing during the course of his life. Unbeknownst to many of his employees save for his closest friends there is a mind that is always moving, gliding at every nuance of information and every glimmer of change he sees. Being dead he has the blessing of staying up every day and keeping track of anything he wishes if he feels there is something wrong or worries him. Cham is bound to know of those who have a shady record in his organization or believes is hiding something regardless if the person or people in question know themselves. As many perceptive carriers have said, “if you think he’s an idiot, he already has you fooled.”
On the other hand, Cham acts like a fool most of the time anyways. There is always a grin or a smile on his face and every day within his office there is always something going on; from playing the trumpet to singing aloud Cham is quite honest with himself and wouldn’t betray any of his friendships. With that said that if one were to make him angry he would not think twice about scolding the person in question, throwing handfuls of mockery into his lectures to top off the bitterness. However, when he lectures people listen; when Cham is serious he is serious, and every word he spits out during his lectures do not go to waste, even the swears.
Apparel
Prior to his death Cham usually could be found wearing a combined mix of black and red leather and cloth for better maneuvering. After his death he found himself wearing plated armor and using his engineering creations to provide speed boosts where ever needed. His plate armor is usually a mixture of red, brown and orange along with the signature Freelance Carriers Union tabard and red hood. He also has a finely-tailored cloak over his back with the images of various birds stitched into it.
Along with his apparel is Reichel, who usually resides in whatever weapon Cham may be carrying on him at any given time. His companions and employees know she’s around if the weapon has a strange, green glow and vines surrounding it from top to bottom. She can appear as an ethereal form of her physical body as she pleases but has to be connected with the weapon at all times; even so she can manipulate the weapon to float along with her so long as she has enough energy to do so.
As with all official FCU members there is usually a radio somewhere on Cham’s person as well.
